JC Paws Dog Sculptures

Picture
On April 18, 2025, three stainless dog silhouettes were officially welcomed to Newtown Park in a ribbon/leash cutting celebration hosted by Johns Creek Beautification (JCB). The beautifully crafted, polished metal, life-size dog sculptures were created by artist Jim Collins and funded by a generous donation from Johns Creek Beautification board member, Michèle Morel.

Jim Collins might be familiar to our residents—in 2017, his “Teak Bench Watcher” was a popular public art feature in Newtown Park for two years.
Jim has sculptural art pieces on permanent display in museums as well as outdoors both here in the USA and abroad.  At 90 years young, he is still making important contributions to the world of public art. The City of Chattanooga has many of his pieces along their river walk park areas.

Why choose dog silhouettes for our city?  JCB’s choice of dog sculptures for Johns Creek seemed a natural fit since our award-winning Newtown Dream Dog Park has long been recognized as one of the best in the USA.
We thought this was a positive and engaging way to honor our city’s accomplishment and add some playful charm to Newtown Park.  Johns Creek is a dog-loving city, and thousands of dogs reside in our community. The new sculptures carry an important message at the base of each dog.  “ADOPT A RESCUE” is inscribed on the supporting base plates reminding everyone that there many canines who need a permanent home and are available to be adopted.

We anticipate that the dog sculptures in Newtown Park will create the perfect photo opportunity, and they are durable enough to endure hugs from the little humans who live in our city and play in our parks.  According to the artist, they should last 500 years and need little maintenance during that time. The three dogs, a Great Dane, a Golden Retriever, and a mutt, are located on the pathway going west from Pavilion 1A.  Stop by any time to enjoy these new art additions and share your pictures with us on Facebook or Instagram.

Read Jon Wilcox’s article in the Johns Creek Herald (March 24, 2025) about Jim Collins, Michèle Morel and the dogs.
